Counseling

How is Tend Health different from my EAP?
Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) are a common benefit provided by employers and meet many employees’ needs. EAPs often include a modest mental health benefit, including a few low-cost or free counseling sessions. At Tend Health:
  • Counselors have specialized training and expertise in working with healthcare professionals.
  • Counselors are doctoral level professionals (clinical psychologists).
  • We connect you with a clinician right away
  • We offer appointments in the evenings and weekends, because we know you have a busy schedule.
Should I just find a counselor through my insurance?
We understand that many people prefer to use their health insurance coverage for mental health services. We also know from experience how hard it can be to try to find someone in your network who is qualified, has openings and a flexible schedule, and who understands the unique challenges and privileges of being a health professional. Tend Health offers all of that and is an alternative to your insurance benefit.
Why doesn’t Tend Health take my insurance for counseling?
When you receive mental health services using your insurance benefit, this information becomes discoverable for various uses, including credentialing, license applications and renewals, disability insurance, and life insurance. Insurance companies also require a DSM-5 diagnosis in order for services to be covered and paid for. At Tend Health, we work from a strength-based mindset and do not need to use a diagnosis to offer therapeutic and effective interventions.
Can I get paperwork to submit to my insurance carrier for reimbursement?
If you have an out-of-network benefit and want to use it to cover counseling, we can issue a superbill sufficient to get reimbursement (this requires a diagnosis). Payment is still invoiced at the time of service. These charges will likely go towards your existing deductible, and then you will be responsible for any coinsurance.
Can I use my HSA or FSA to pay for counseling appointments?
Yes you can! We can accept FSA and HSA as a form of payment as long as your FSA or HSA card is affiliated with a major credit card. We can also provide you with any necessary paperwork to get reimbursed if your FSA or HSA account doesn’t have an associated debit card.
Can Tend Health do couples counseling or see my partner or kids?
Together we will decide what is the most useful approach to counseling. If this involves seeing you with your partner or child(ren) we can do that. Many insurance companies, for example, do not cover couples counseling. Because we do not bill insurance, we have flexibility to offer the care that is most needed and will be most beneficial.
I have an unpredictable schedule- due to life - how do I do ongoing therapy with my clinician?
We schedule with your schedule in mind. We do not expect you to schedule the same day of the week or at the same time. In fact, you are always in the driver’s seat as far as frequency of sessions. Sometimes you need more, sometimes less. You and your clinician will discuss what works best.
What is your cancellation policy for counseling and coaching?
We get it. We do not charge you for cancelled appointments that are rescheduled. Even if you cancel a few minutes beforehand. You can email, call, or text your clinician directly or through the portal to easily cancel and reschedule.
What do I do if I have questions about data and privacy?
We take the security and confidentiality of your personal information seriously. What you share with your therapist will remain confidential following the rules of the HIPAA. We follow industry best practices to ensure that your personal health information is kept secure.

Courses

Does Tend Health offer continuing education credits for courses?
We are working on this, stay tuned! In the meantime, we can offer you a Certificate of Attendance that details the dates and times of course completion, total hours attended, the topics covered and any other requisite material to submit to your licensure board.
What is the refund/cancellation policy for courses and group coaching?
We care about developing a relationship with you and want you to be fully satisfied. If you have registered and paid for a course/coaching and need to postpone, we will issue you a credit to hold your space for a future date. If you register and pay for a course or group coaching that you cannot or choose not to attend, cancel your registration by email with us and we will give you a full refund minus a $20 fee to cover credit card processing.
